The Oakland Raiders were dealt a blow to the tight end position with the announcement that David Ausberry will undergo a knee procedure on Wednesday.  It is a huge disappointment for Ausberry, who suffered a shoulder injury that ended his 2013 season before it started. Now, he has a knee procedure coming that will put his 2014 season in jeopardy.

“He’s got a knee,” head coach Dennis Allen said. “It looks like we’re probably going to have to do a procedure on that knee, so he may be out for a little while.”

Allen was looking for one of the tight ends to step up and emerge as a strong option and said earlier this week that Ausberry was leading the competition. Ausberry is a player the team has had high hopes for, but is missing significant time again. He converted from wide receiver to tight end when Oakland drafted him in 2011. He has all the physical tools to be a contributor, but injuries have hurt his development.

With Ausberry out indefinitely, the Raiders will turn to Mychal Rivera to take over most of the tight end duties. He emerged last year as a threat in the passing. He will get the majority of the reps as training camp continues.

As for Ausberry, Allen was hopeful he could return at some point during the season, but that is up in the air.

“Yeah, we should be able to get him back at some point and time,” Allen said. “I don’t know how long that is going to be. We’ll have to evaluate that as we go along.”
