Oakland Raiders' first-round pick Khalil Mack put his first training camp practice in the books. This is where Mack will take the steps to become the player the Raiders hope he can be and begin the development process to achieve his goals. Even with the expectations put on Mack by the team and fans, no one has higher aspirations than himself.
“I’m going to go out and make an impact,” Mack said. “Expectations, I want to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year and that’s what I’m going to hold myself to while I’m out there on the field working, and remember that while I’m out there working hard.”
Mack has the talent and work ethic to accomplish his expectations. He has already impressed players and coaches with his ability in previous offseason workouts. The next step for Mack is to absorb as much information as possible for coaches and veterans so he can play fast and react fast.
“The toughest adjustment so far, I think the playbook would be one of them, paying attention to detail, the level of detail on this level is high, yeah, coach Bob [Sanders], he always sets a high standard and he wants you to come out here and get better every day,” Mack said. “If there’s something small that you can work on, he wants you to work on that.”
Mack has a few things that have helped him ease his transition to the NFL. He is a sponge to veterans like Justin Tuck and LaMarr Woodley, absorbing all of their advice and tips. He has a great attitude and work ethic. He understands that the only way he becomes the Defensive Rookie of the Year is through effort and improving his game.
“I’m starting at the bottom right now, trying to work my way up,” Mack said. “I know I’ve got to get a lot better, so I can’t give myself a grade, I know it wouldn’t be too good. But, hopefully I can improve a lot more.”
