All eight of the Oakland Raiders' 2014 NFL Draft selections are in Aurora, Ohio today for the NFL Rookie Symposium. It will be a four day orientation and the rookies will have the opportunity to learn about acclimating to the NFL before training camp begins next month. The rookies will hear from current and former NFL players as well as front office members and coaches around the league with a focus on character and leadership as well as social and professional responsibilities.

The Raiders in attendance are Khalil Mack, Derek Carr, Gabe Jackson, Keith McGill, Justin Ellis, Shelby Harris, Jonathan Dowling, and Travis Carrie. The NFL requires rookies to take part. They will view videos, attend workshops, and hear presentations about a variety of subjects. Some of the topics of emphasis include, player safety, mental health, and substance abuse.

Some notable current and former players who will present at the symposium include Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Eddie George, Warrick Dunn and current players, Tyrann Mathieu, Giovanni Bernard, and Kyle Long.

While all of these things seem pretty corporate and uninteresting, the symposium can do a lot of good. The NFL has had a number of players with serious issues and this event can educate new players to learn for those mistakes as well as ease their transition to the NFL. The Raiders want these rookies focused on football and helping the team achieve success. That will not be the case if they having issues assimilating into the league. The rookies can take these four days to learn effective ways to manage their life in the NFL.
