The Oakland Raiders have announced four additions to their 2014 coaching staff. The Raiders had previously brought back a large portion of the 2013 staff including defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tony Sparano and offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Now, the Raiders have added defensive backs coach Joe Woods, defensive backs assistant coach Marcus Robertson, assistant special teams coach Chris Boniol, and assistant strength and conditioning coach Vernon Stephens to complete their staff.
Woods comes to the Oakland Raiders from the Minnesota Vikings staff where he spent eight seasons. He also coached two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and more than 10 years of various college coaching stops. In Woods time with the Vikings, he coached a secondary that ranked 31st in pass defense in 2013. In the previous two seasons, the team was 24th in passing defense in 2012 and 26th in 2011. He will look to turn around a Raiders pass defense, that allowed 255.8 yards per game in 2013 and ranked 28th in the league.
Robertson joins the Raiders from the Detroit Lions where he was a defensive backs assistant in 2012 and promoted to defensive backs coach last season. He also coached with the Tennessee Titans for five seasons prior to Detroit. During his time with the Lions, they ranked 14th in passing defense in 2012 and 23rd in 2013.
Boniol is a former NFL kicker for six seasons. He has spent his coaching career with the Dallas Cowboys for four seasons in the same role as he will hold with the Raiders. In his time in Dallas, Boniol helped kicker Dan Bailey connect on more than 90 percent of his kicks the last two seasons. He will work with Sebastian Janikowski, who is coming off a lackluster year by his standards. He only made 21-30 kicks in 2013, which is 70 percent.
Stephens rounds out the new additions. He held the same assistant strength and conditioning coach title for the last six seasons with the San Diego Chargers. He also worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an intern to break into the business.
