The Oakland Raiders were back on the practice field Wednesday in preparation for the Tennessee Titans Sunday. One player who will not be on the field for the Raiders the rest of this season is cornerback DJ Hayden. The team announced he will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
Oakland selected Hayden in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was dealing with a groin injury and had sports hernia surgery yesterday. He played in eight games finishing with 26 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. Like most NFL rookies, Hayden had his highlights and struggles. He sealed the Raiders win against the San Diego Chargers with an interception in the endzone, but was torched by the Philadelphia Eagles for three huge plays and two touchdowns. Hayden will now recover from the surgery and come back next season with high expectations.
With Hayden going to the injured reserve, linebacker Miles Burris has been activated to the roster. Burris has not played this season recovering from offseason knee surgery. He was on the physically unable to perform list, but now joins the active roster. He will be eased back into the rotation at linebacker and contribute on special teams. He will provide depth at a position of strength for the Raiders. Linebackers Nick Roach and Kevin Burnett have played extremely well this season and rookie Sio Moore has made an impact. Burris will start to find his way back and has a chance of playing this Sunday.
Other Wednesday practice injuries include: safety Tyvon Branch, defensive end Jason Hunter, wide receiver Denarius Moore, and running back Darren McFadden all did not practice. Guard Mike Brisiel, wide receiver Juron Criner and Andre Holmes as well as linebacker Kaluka Maiava, tackle Matt McCants, quarterback Terrelle Pryor and defensive end Daniel Muir were all limited in practice. Head coach Dennis Allen is hopeful tackle Jared Veldheer is ready to play on Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys. He has been out all season with tore triceps.
