As the Oakland Raiders prepare for their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, head coach Dennis Allen has ruled out rookie first round pick DJ Hayden, second round pick Menelik Watson, and linebackers Kaluka Maiava and Miles Burris because of injuries. It is just the first preseason game so the concern is minimal. However, the Raiders need contribution from their early draft picks and this is setback.

Hayden's injury history is well documented. He suffered a very serious injury in college that threatened his life as a vein severed that carries blood from the lower half of his body to his heart. This offseason he had abdominal surgery to clean up scar tissue and has yet to fully recover. He has participated in a good portion of training camp, but the Raiders have limited his contact. He also recently had a hamstring injury flare up.

“DJ won’t play in the game against Dallas, and then we’ll kind of re-evaluate where we’re at with him after that,” Allen said. “It’s really more of a relation to the surgery that he had this offseason, as opposed to the heart condition.”

Along with Hayden, second round rookie Menelik Watson will be inactive against the Cowboys. He has an undisclosed injury that has kept him out all of training camp. Any chance Watson would compete and win the right tackle job is decreasing with every practice he misses. Linebacker Miles Burris, who is recovering for offseason knee surgery will not play and neither will linebacker Kaluka Maiava, who has been out over a week with a lower leg injury.
