During the first week of Oakland Raiders training camp, Jacoby Ford was missing in action. He suffered what he described as tightness in muscle behind his left knee. Ford missed all of last season with a Lisfranc foot injury. He will be working to get the injury 100 percent for Friday's preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
“It felt really good to get back out there,” Ford said. “Just starting to get back in the groove of things and just kind of easing back into it. Not really hitting full-go yet, but definitely about 90 percent right now.”
He biggest knock on Ford is he can't stay on the field. In his three seasons, he only played all 16 games as a rookie. He missed eight games the next year and the entire season last year. He was showing development before his preseason injury in 2012. He needs to be on the field to develop chemistry with new quarterback Matt Flynn as well as gain command of the new offense.
“It’s an offense that uses every single receiver that you have,” Ford said. “We have a whole bunch of different routes that you can either go deep or we have a lot of intermediate routes. We have a lot of short routes that we can turn into big plays and it’s good on the run game. It definitely helps us out a lot.”
With Ford back, the receiving corps can work with its full stable. Head coach Dennis Allen is searching for someone to step forward and become the go to guy. Ford is capable of making the group better, but he must stay on the field.
“I’m doing everything I can to take care of my body in the right way,” Ford said. “When I had to sit out last year, I really had no choice with the foot surgery. I’m glad to get that fixed but, as far as the leg, it’s something that’s real minor. So it was nothing for me to panic about or anything. It’s more nagging than anything and I’m just a little frustrated but I’m fine now though.”
